Skaneateles Lake is one of New York State’s Finger Lakes, located in central New York. It is known for clear water and a narrow, elongated basin typical of glacially carved Finger Lakes.
The lake is popular for boating, swimming and lakeshore recreation, with the village of Skaneateles at the north end providing dining, lodging and marinas. Its water clarity and scenic shoreline attract day visitors and seasonal residents from nearby urban centres.
Formed by glacial action during the Pleistocene, the lake has been used for settlement, transport and recreation since European-American settlement of the region. Towns and infrastructure grew along the shoreline in the 19th and 20th centuries to support tourism and local economies.
Skaneateles Lake lies in central New York State, west of Syracuse, within the Finger Lakes region; the lake’s long axis runs roughly north-south and is surrounded by low hills and agricultural land.

How to Get to Skaneateles Lake #
Skaneateles is about 35 miles southwest of Syracuse, New York. From I-90 take NY-41/NY-20 to the village (roughly a 45-minute drive). The nearest Amtrak service is in Syracuse; local buses (Centro) connect Syracuse to nearby towns but not directly into the village-plan for a taxi from Syracuse or drive. Once in the village the lakefront and village center are walkable.
Tips for Visiting Skaneateles Lake #
- Walk the lakeside in the hour after sunrise for still water and few people - the village docks are quiet and photographers get the best reflections then.
- Rent a wooden boat from Skaneateles village instead of a speedboat; the lake is famously clear and quieter craft let you appreciate it.
- Park in the municipal lots off East Genesee Street to avoid the tiny village curbside spaces; walk the short distance into town.
- Try the local rosé in late summer - several small restaurants in the village run limited-production Finger Lakes wines.
