Main image

Skaneateles Lake is one of New York State’s Finger Lakes, located in central New York. It is known for clear water and a narrow, elongated basin typical of glacially carved Finger Lakes.

The lake is popular for boating, swimming and lakeshore recreation, with the village of Skaneateles at the north end providing dining, lodging and marinas. Its water clarity and scenic shoreline attract day visitors and seasonal residents from nearby urban centres.

Formed by glacial action during the Pleistocene, the lake has been used for settlement, transport and recreation since European-American settlement of the region. Towns and infrastructure grew along the shoreline in the 19th and 20th centuries to support tourism and local economies.

Skaneateles Lake lies in central New York State, west of Syracuse, within the Finger Lakes region; the lake’s long axis runs roughly north-south and is surrounded by low hills and agricultural land.

  • Towns and access: The village of Skaneateles sits at the lake's northern tip and is a longstanding lakeside community with recreational amenities.
