Onondaga Lake is a freshwater lake in Onondaga County, New York State, located immediately northwest of Syracuse. The lake has been prominent in regional industry, recreation and environmental restoration efforts.

The lake’s shoreline and waters were heavily impacted by industrial and municipal discharges during the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to widespread contamination. Since the late 20th century the lake and its sediments have been the subject of remediation and monitoring programs to address legacy pollution.

The lake lies directly northwest of the city of Syracuse in central New York State, forming part of the regional landscape of Onondaga County.

From downtown Syracuse, take I-81 north then I-690 west (or local routes) to reach the lake’s park access points; Onondaga Lake Park runs along the eastern shore and is reachable from routes off NY-370 and I-690. Bicycle and pedestrian paths connect the park to nearby neighborhoods.
