Sirmium

Archaeological Site Ancient Roman city and former imperial residence site

Ancient Sirmium at modern Sremska Mitrovica preserves Roman ruins and mosaics from an imperial provincial capital; archaeologists and history visitors come for excavations and the local museum.

Main image

Sirmium was an important ancient city at the site of present-day Sremska Mitrovica in northern Serbia and served as a major Roman and Late Roman urban centre. It was one of the Roman Empire’s key cities and later an imperial residence in the 3rd century AD.

Visitors can see in-situ foundations and fragmentary remains of public buildings, baths and parts of an imperial palace, along with artefacts held in the local archaeological museum. The site is notable for mosaics, inscriptions and finds that illustrate its urban and administrative role in antiquity.

Sirmium grew from an early Celtic or Illyrian settlement into a Roman colony and became particularly prominent in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD; it was a capital and base for several emperors in the Late Roman period. Archaeological investigation has taken place intermittently since the 19th century and continues to reveal the town plan and major structures.

Geographically it lies in the Syrmia region of Vojvodina, on the Sava River at modern Sremska Mitrovica, roughly west of Serbia’s capital, Belgrade. The archaeological remains are spread through and around the modern town rather than concentrated at a single isolated ruin.

  • Site layout: Excavated ruins are interspersed with the modern town; a short walking route links visible remains with the city museum for context and artefacts.
  • Extent: The site's scale is extensive - Sirmium was a major Late Roman centre and its archaeological footprint extends across several square kilometres around Sremska Mitrovica.

How to Get to Sirmium #

Sirmium corresponds to the modern town of Sremska Mitrovica in Vojvodina. The site is reachable by road from Belgrade: the driving distance is roughly 80 km west of central Belgrade (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic), primarily via the A3/E70 motorway and regional roads heading toward Sremska Mitrovica.

Regional bus services run between Belgrade and Sremska Mitrovica; once in town the archaeological remains and museum are within short local taxi or walking distance.

Tips for Visiting Sirmium #

  • Use Sremska Mitrovica (the modern town) as your base and check opening times at the local City Museum before you travel - the best Roman artifacts and mosaics from Sirmium are housed there and regional museums often have limited hours.
  • Join a guided visit or contact the museum/archaeological service in advance to see in‑situ Roman remains and underground features; independent access to excavation areas can be restricted without prior arrangement.
  • Plan visits in the morning to coincide with museum opening hours and smaller visitor numbers, then spend time walking the town to find dispersed archaeological sites that many day visitors miss.
