The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, commonly called the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is a historic public garden in Pamplemousses District, Mauritius, established in the late 18th century. It houses extensive plant collections, including large waterlily ponds and many palm species.

Walkways and themed beds display spice plants, sugarcane, medicinal plants and a notable palm collection; a central pond contains the giant Victoria waterlilies that are a focal attraction. The garden functions as both a public park and a center for conservation and botanical study of regional and exotic species.

The garden lies north of Port Louis in Pamplemousses District on the coastal plain of northwest Mauritius and is one of the island’s principal tourist and scientific sites.

  • Founding and location: Founded in the 18th century under the French colonial administrator Pierre Poivre and located about 10-15 kilometres north of the capital Port Louis.
  • Notable collections: Famous for giant waterlilies (Victoria spp.) and a large historic collection of palms and spice plants that remain organized into themed sections.

What to See #

  • Victoria lily pond: The central water-lily pond contains large Victoria lilies, a signature attraction with leaves that can reach more than a metre in diameter under cultivation.
  • Avenues and plant collections: The avenue of royal palms and the spice and economic plant collections trace back to the garden's original layout and colonial-period cultivation schemes.
