Simtokha Dzong is a small fortress-monastery in Thimphu District, Bhutan, built in the early 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. It functions as both a religious centre and a monastic school.
The dzong is notable for its compact size compared with other Bhutanese dzongs and for its historical role in the consolidation of central Bhutan. It contains temples, administrative rooms and monk accommodation and continues to host religious instruction and ceremonies.
The dzong stands on a strategic hill at the entrance to the Thimphu valley, a short distance from the city of Thimphu.
- Founding: Constructed in the early 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it is one of Bhutan's oldest dzongs and retains a functioning religious community.
How to Get to Simtokha Dzong #
Simtokha Dzong is about 5-7 km south of Thimphu city centre; take the road toward Simtokha from central Thimphu (short taxi or local bus ride). The approach is short and well-signed from Thimphu’s main streets.

- Visit early in the morning to avoid the traffic to Thimphu - the dzong sits just south of the city and can get busy during festivals.
- Respect monastic rules: photography inside certain temple rooms is forbidden and visitors should dress modestly.
- Hire a local guide in Thimphu who can explain Simtokha's 17th-century murals and the zorig chusum (thirteen traditional arts) taught there.
