Simien Mountains National Park is a highland national park in northern Ethiopia notable for jagged plateaus and high peaks; the massif includes Ras Dashen, one of Ethiopia’s highest summits at about 4,550 metres. The area is recognized for its outstanding scenery and unique montane ecosystems.

The park contains extensive afro-alpine plateaus, steep escarpments and deep valleys that provide several viewpoints and trekking routes of one to several days. Hikers often use established camps such as Sankaber and Geech and can encounter large gelada baboon troops and the endemic Walia ibex.

The area developed as a reserve to protect its wildlife and landscapes; it was later recognised for its natural significance at international level. Over time routes and basic visitor facilities have been established to support trekking and wildlife viewing.

Geographically it lies in northern Ethiopia in the Simien range, north of Gondar, within highland terrain of the Amhara Region. The park covers rugged, high-elevation ground with narrow access roads leading to park gateways.

  • Best time to visit: Best visited in the dry months, roughly October to February, when trails are firmer and visibility is best.
  • Access point: Debark is the usual gateway town for park entry and trek logistics, with established camping and shepherd shelters on major routes.
