The Sierra de los Cuchumatanes is a highland mountain range in western Guatemala noted for its extensive high plateaus and steep ridgelines. It is the highest non-volcanic upland area in Central America and supports a mosaic of agricultural terraces, pastures and remnant cloud forest.
The range is culturally important as home to Maya Mam communities who maintain traditional dress, forms of agriculture and village life at high elevations. Roads are limited and many communities remain relatively remote, so access for visitors often involves highland roads and trekking.
The landscape includes altiplano plateaus exceeding 3,800 metres in places, with microclimates that support specialized crops and pastoralism. The range is a significant cultural and ecological region within Guatemala.
Geographically it lies in western Guatemala, principally within Huehuetenango department, and stretches across a broad upland zone west of the Motagua fault system.
