Sidon Sea Castle
Castle Crusader-era fortress built on a small coastal islet
Crusader-era fortress built on an islet at Sidon’s harbor, connected to the city by a causeway. Tourists visit for medieval walls, coastal views and proximity to Sidon’s souks and fishing port.
The Sidon Sea Castle is a medieval fortress built on a small island at the entrance to the harbour of Sidon (Saida) on Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast. It was constructed by Crusader builders and later modified by subsequent rulers.
The compact island fortification includes curtain walls, towers and a courtyard area where visitors can walk the ramparts and look back towards the city and across the harbour. The causeway connecting the island to the town makes the castle easily accessible on foot at low tide and for short crossings.
Originally erected by Crusader forces in the medieval period, the castle subsequently sustained repairs and alterations during the Mamluk and Ottoman eras, reflecting layers of military and architectural history. The site has been repaired and conserved at various times to preserve the surviving masonry.
Geographically it occupies a tidal island at the entrance to Sidon’s harbour on Lebanon’s Mediterranean shoreline, immediately adjacent to the modern town and harbour facilities.
- Setting and access: Built on a small island at the entrance to Sidon's harbour and connected to the mainland by a causeway, the site offers sea-facing views and a compact circuit of ramparts.
What to See #
- Causeway: A short man-made causeway links the castle island to the Sidon shoreline, allowing pedestrian access from the town to the fortifications on the small island.
- Walls and towers: A sequence of fortified walls and towers built by Crusader-era masons forms the main visible structure, with later repairs and modifications evident from subsequent periods.
How to Get to Sidon Sea Castle #
From Beirut drive south along the coastal highway to Sidon (Saida) - the city is about 40 km from Beirut. In Sidon head to the seafront; the Sea Castle sits on a small connected island reached on foot from the old city waterfront/promenade (a short walk from Sidon’s central souk and harbour area). Local minibuses/coasters also run from Beirut to Sidon.
Tips for Visiting Sidon Sea Castle #
- Go late afternoon toward sunset for cooler light and fewer daytime visitors; the sea-facing battlements and views back to the old town are at their best as the light softens.
- Enter from the old town/souk side so you can walk the causeway directly and then continue exploring the adjacent souk, fishing port and waterfront cafés - many visitors don't explore beyond the castle itself.
