Sibudu Cave

Sibudu Cave is a rock-shelter archaeological site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, notable for a long, well-preserved Middle Stone Age sequence. The stratified deposits have made it one of the key sites for studying early modern human behavior in southern Africa.

The site preserves a deep, continuous sequence of occupation layers with dates often cited between about 77,000 and 38,000 years ago. Excavations have recovered bone and stone tools, evidence of hafting and adhesives, preserved plant bedding, and residues interpreted as poisons for hunting-materials that illuminate daily and technological practices.

Excavations at the shelter have produced a detailed stratigraphy that links artifact types to environmental and behavioral changes through the later Pleistocene. Archaeological work at the site has contributed to debates on the origins of complex behavior in anatomically modern humans in southern Africa.

The shelter sits in KwaZulu-Natal roughly northeast of Durban, on inland terrain above the coastal plain. The nearest administrative region is KwaZulu-Natal and the site is accessible from towns along the province’s north coast.
