Siberut is the largest of the Mentawai Islands, located off the west coast of Sumatra and administered as part of West Sumatra province, Indonesia. The island is known for its intact rainforest, endemic wildlife and the indigenous Mentawai culture.

Key attractions are ethnographic visits to traditional Mentawai villages, guided rainforest treks and wildlife observation; much of the island’s interior remains roadless and is accessed by river travel and multi-day expeditions. Conservation efforts include protection of significant tracts as a national park.

Siberut has been inhabited by the Mentawai people for millennia and cultural life remains an important component of the island’s identity, alongside small-scale fishing and subsistence agriculture. The island’s remoteness has limited large-scale development and helped preserve both culture and habitat.

Geographically Siberut lies in the Indian Ocean off Sumatra’s west coast and forms the northern part of the Mentawai archipelago; it is administered from West Sumatra and is reached by regular ferry and occasional air links from the Sumatran mainland.

  • Mentawai culture: Home to the indigenous Mentawai people, whose traditional longhouse villages and cultural practices are a principal cultural attraction.
  • Wildlife and access: The island conserves substantial areas of lowland rainforest and endemic wildlife; much of the interior is reachable only by river or organized treks.

What to See #

  • Siberut National Park: A large national park covering much of the island, protecting lowland and montane rainforest and riverine systems that support endemic species and traditional village life.
