Šibenik Cathedral

Šibenik Cathedral (Cathedral of St. James) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Šibenik, Croatia, principally built in the 15th and early 16th centuries. It is widely recognised for its unique stone construction and architectural significance in the Adriatic region.

The building is famed for being constructed largely from local stone without major use of timber, and for its domed roof and detailed carved stonework, including a band of sculpted human heads. Visitors most often come to view the exterior façades, the dome, and the sculpted decoration around portals and the baptistery.

Construction began in the mid-15th century and concluded in the early 16th century under several master builders, reflecting Gothic and early Renaissance influences. Over the centuries the cathedral has been refurbished and conserved to preserve its stone fabric and carved elements.

The cathedral sits in the historic centre of Šibenik on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, close to the waterfront and about 50-60 kilometres from the larger cities of Zadar to the north and Split to the southeast.
