Shuri Castle
Museum Historic Ryukyuan castle, restored after devastating fire
Shuri Castle, the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom in Naha, presents restored gates, ornate woodwork and museum exhibits on Okinawan history; visitors tour courtyards and cultural displays.
Shuri Castle is the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, located in Naha on Okinawa Island, and served as the political and cultural centre of the kingdom. The site is internationally recognized as part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Among the site’s most visited elements are the ornate entrance gate Shureimon, the central Seiden (main hall) which functioned as the royal audience chamber, and nearby ritual stones and gardens tied to Ryukyuan religious practice. The castle complex sits across a hillside, offering views over Naha and incorporating stone walls, courtyards and ceremonial spaces.
Shuri Castle originated as the seat of Ryukyu kings from the medieval period; it served as the kingdom’s political centre until the 19th century and sustained heavy damage during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. A large-scale postwar reconstruction culminated in a restored complex that opened late 20th century, and the site has undergone further restoration following a destructive fire in 2019.
The castle stands within the city of Naha on Okinawa Island, on a low hill east of the city centre and is the principal historic attraction within Naha’s urban area.
- UNESCO site: Designated as part of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu" UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000.
- 2019 fire and reconstruction: The castle's main hall (Seiden) suffered a major fire in October 2019 and underwent reconstruction efforts thereafter; parts of the site and surrounding features may be in different states of repair.
What to See #
- Seiden (main hall): The Seiden (main hall) was the central ceremonial building and principal audience chamber of the Ryukyu kings before its 2019 destruction; it served as the focal point of the castle complex.
- Shureimon Gate: Shureimon is the iconic two-tiered gate with Okinawan-style tiled roof that fronts the castle complex and is frequently used as a symbol of Okinawa.
- Sonohyan-utaki Ishimon: Sonohyan-utaki Ishimon is a nearby sacred stone gate used historically in royal ritual approach and is part of the broader Gusuku Sites ensemble.
