ShUM Sites of Speyer, Worms and Mainz

The ShUM Sites of Speyer, Worms and Mainz are a serial ensemble of medieval Jewish cultural and religious sites in the Rhineland of Germany that document the development of Ashkenazi Jewish life in Europe. The sites include synagogue remains, ritual baths and historic cemeteries associated with medieval Jewish communities.

The three cities were important centres of Jewish learning and jurisprudence in the Middle Ages, forming a cultural network often referenced together in historical sources. Over centuries the communities experienced episodes of prosperity, persecution and rebuilding; many of the preserved sites date from the medieval period and later phases of reconstruction.

The ShUM sites are located along the Rhine in southwest Germany in and around the towns of Speyer, Worms and Mainz in the Rhineland-Palatinate region and its vicinity.
