The complex includes the palace building, extensive formal gardens with both French and English-style sections, and numerous garden follies and pavilions such as a mosque-style pavilion and classical temples. The site also contains a preserved court theatre used for performances and the annual Schwetzingen Festival of opera and classical music.

Major building and garden works date to the 18th century, carried out and expanded by successive Electors Palatine. The gardens were developed as a showpiece combining baroque formality with later landscape tastes.

The palace sits in the town of Schwetzingen in the Rhine-Neckar region, between Mannheim and Heidelberg, and is managed as a public historic site and garden complex.
