Königstuhl (Odenwald) Mountain

Königstuhl in the Odenwald is a prominent summit near Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, rising to roughly 567 metres above sea level. It is a well-known local viewpoint and research site.

From the summit there are wide panoramic views over the Rhine plain and the city of Heidelberg; the area is a popular destination for day hikes and viewpoint visits. The summit area also hosts the historic observatory that has contributed to regional astronomy.

The peak has long been used as a lookout and recreational destination; the observatory on the Königstuhl was established in the late 19th century and became noted for astronomical research. Walks and railway links have made the summit accessible to visitors for more than a century.

From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof take bus 39 toward Schlierbach/Heidelberger Bergbahn and transfer to the Bergbahn funicular at Königstuhl stop, or opt for the scenic footpaths from Heidelberg’s old town (approximately 4-6 km depending on route). By car, follow B37/A5 and signs for Königstuhl/Heidelberger Bergbahn; parking available near the lower funicular station.

• Walk the final ridge path from the town of Neckarsteinach for quieter views rather than the main summit car park.
• Bring a windproof layer - the summit can be unexpectedly blustery even in summer.
• If timing matters, arrive around sunset for the Rhine Valley light; day-trippers usually leave by late afternoon.
