Shuklaphanta National Park

Shuklaphanta National Park is a protected lowland park in far-western Nepal in Sudurpashchim Pradesh, known for extensive grasslands and floodplain habitats. The area supports a variety of large mammal species and seasonal wetlands important for birds.

The park’s characteristic feature is wide open grassland plains interspersed with river channels and forest patches; it is particularly noted for its populations of swamp deer (Barasingha) and for supporting seasonal movements of elephants and other ungulates. Birdlife includes numerous waterbirds and raptors drawn to the wetlands.

The area was originally managed as a wildlife reserve and later upgraded to national park status to strengthen protection for its grassland and wetland ecosystems. Management aims combine wildlife conservation with the needs of local communities.

Shuklaphanta lies in the Terai lowlands of far-western Nepal near the border with India, in Kanchanpur and adjacent districts; the nearest sizable towns provide access and park entry points.
