Shoushan is a low coastal hill and urban natural area on the eastern side of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, known locally as Monkey Mountain. It functions as a popular green space immediately adjacent to the city and its port.
A network of short trails, lookout points and small temples provide most of the attraction. The site is notable for frequent sightings of wild Formosan rock macaques and for panoramic views over Kaohsiung Harbor and the nearby coastal bays. There are also information boards and pathways that connect to nearby neighborhoods and university areas.
The hill has been used and modified over centuries for defensive works and local shrines; more recently it has been managed as an urban recreation area with trails and conservation measures. Some older military fortifications and bunkers remain along parts of the ridge.
Geographically it rises directly above the western edge of the Kaohsiung basin, overlooking the harbor and the Taiwan Strait. It sits close to the district of Gushan and near landmarks such as Sizihwan and National Sun Yat-sen University.
- Wildlife caution: Home to wild Formosan macaques that are commonly seen on trails; do not feed or approach them.
- Best time and trails: Several paved and unpaved trails offer short hikes and city viewpoints; late afternoon provides good harbor and sunset views.
