Shore Temple
Temple 7th-century Pallava rock-cut temple by the sea
On Mamallapuram’s seafront the eighth‑century Shore Temple stands carved from granite blocks, part of the Pallava monuments UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors study its reliefs, walk tide‑edged stonework and sample coastal Tamil cuisine nearby.
The Shore Temple is an 8th-century Pallava-era stone temple complex on the coast at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, India, and is part of the UNESCO Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram. It is one of the region’s most recognisable coastal temples and is carved from local granite.
The complex comprises the surviving shore-facing shrines and associated sculptural panels and mandapas set on a rocky outcrop directly above the sea. The temple’s exterior reliefs and stonework are a principal attraction and the site is often photographed at sunrise or low tide when the setting is most dramatic.
Constructed by Pallava rulers in the 7th to 8th centuries as part of a broader temple and port landscape, the Shore Temple illustrates Pallava stone temple architecture and coastal monumentality. The site has been conserved as part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.
The Shore Temple sits on the Coromandel Coast at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), facing the Bay of Bengal and about 55-60 kilometres south of Chennai.

Tips for Visiting Shore Temple #
- Arrive at sunrise to catch the Shore Temple silhouetted against low tide and the soft eastern light-the sculptures show more relief before the crowds arrive.
- Enter Mahabalipuram from the eastern side (Old Mahabalipuram Road) to avoid the busier main parking and to walk along the beaches toward the temple.
- Look for small panels and inscriptions near the temple foundations that interpret Pallava stonework-many visitors miss the subtle iconography carved on lower plinths.
