Shire Highlands

The Shire Highlands are an upland plateau region in southern Malawi that forms the headwaters and watershed for the Shire River and contains important agricultural and urban areas. The highlands include towns and cities that serve as regional commercial and administrative centres.

The area supports farming, plantations and settlements adapted to the cooler, higher-elevation climate compared with the adjacent Shire valley. It is valued for its mix of cultivated land, towns and nearby scenic uplands used for recreation and forestry.

Historically the highlands have been the principal agricultural and economic zone of southern Malawi, contributing cash crops and serving as transport and service hubs for the region. Urban centres in the highlands developed as colonial and post-colonial commercial nodes.

Geographically the Shire Highlands lie in southern Malawi above the Shire River valley; the plateau gives way to lower-lying plains and river systems that drain southward into the Shire River.
