Shikoku
Island Small Japanese island famed for Shikoku pilgrimage route
Shikoku attracts pilgrims on the 88-temple trail, cyclists on the Shimanami Kaido and hikers to Iya Valley; local udon and small fishing ports round out visits.
Shikoku is the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, located to the south of Honshu across the Inland Sea. It is noted for its rural interior, mountain valleys and the culturally important Shikoku pilgrimage of 88 temples.
Key attractions include the long pilgrimage route that links temples and religious sites around the island, scenic river valleys and coastal plains. The island’s towns offer access points for temple circuits, ferry connections to other islands, and local hot-spring resorts.
Historically the island developed distinct local traditions and retained agricultural and transport ties with Honshu and Kyushu; the pilgrimage has medieval roots and remains an active spiritual and cultural practice. Modern road and rail links concentrate around the coastal cities while the interior remains sparsely populated.
Geographically Shikoku sits between Honshu to the north and Kyushu to the west, and is connected to Honshu by several major bridges across the Inland Sea.
- Pilgrimage distance: The pilgrimage is traditionally completed on foot and links 88 temples; many visitors still follow sections of the route and some complete it over several weeks.
What to See #
- Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage: Historic pilgrimage route linking 88 Buddhist temples in a roughly circular route around the island, traditionally covering about 1,200 km on foot.
- Iya Valley: Mountain valley noted for steep, vine-hung gorges and traditional thatched-roof houses that attract visitors for hiking and cultural interest.
- Matsuyama and Takamatsu: Major urban centres offering transport links and local attractions, including a city with a famous historic hot-spring district and one with a well-known garden.
How to Get to Shikoku #
Shikoku (the island) is reached from Honshu by several bridge routes and by ferry. The Great Seto Bridge (Seto-Ohashi) links Okayama (Honshu) to Sakaide/Takamatsu (Kagawa) via an expressway crossing the Inland Sea; another road route is via the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge to Awaji Island and then the Ōnaruto Bridge to Tokushima. Ferries also connect ports on Honshu (e.g., Kobe, Osaka, Hiroshima) with Takamatsu, Tokushima and other Shikoku ports, and the island has major airports at Takamatsu, Matsuyama, Tokushima and Kōchi with flights from Tokyo and Osaka.
Tips for Visiting Shikoku #
- Visit Shikoku in spring (cherry blossom) or autumn (fall colors) for the best weather and scenery; avoid Japan's Golden Week (early May) and mid‑August Obon holidays if you want fewer crowds.
- If you plan to explore interior highlights such as the Iya Valley or do sections of the 88‑temple pilgrimage, rent a car-public transport is good around major cities but many rural sights are far easier to reach by road.
- If you'll rely on trains, base yourself in a regional hub (for example Takamatsu or Matsuyama) and plan day trips by local rail or bus-this reduces long transfers and gives you time to visit coastal and inland attractions efficiently.
Best Time to Visit Shikoku #
Best in spring for blossoms or autumn for foliage and comfortable weather; avoid the hot, humid summer months and the peak typhoon period.
