Shiga Highlands (commonly known as Shiga Kogen) is a broad highland and resort area in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, located within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. It is one of the main highland and ski regions of central Honshu.

The area comprises an interconnected cluster of ski zones and mountain plateaus with trails for summer hiking and winter skiing. Much of the terrain lies above 1,300 meters, and the region is served by hot-spring towns that act as bases for visitors. The nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park is a frequent paired visit for travelers based in the highlands.

The modern resort infrastructure was developed in the 20th century for winter sports and year-round mountain recreation, while the highland itself is a natural plateau shaped by alpine processes. The site is managed in coordination with the national park for conservation and tourism uses.

The highlands sit in northern Nagano Prefecture around the town of Yamanouchi, in central Honshu. The landscape is a mix of broad plateaus, volcanic ridges and valleys within the greater Joshinetsu Kogen highland system.

  • Elevation: Much of the highland sits above 1,300 meters, giving it a long winter snow season and alpine vegetation at higher elevations.
  • Nearby attraction: Jigokudani Monkey Park, where wild Japanese macaques bathe in hot springs, is located close to the highlands and is commonly visited on the same trip.
