The nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park is a frequent paired visit for travelers based in the highlands.
The modern resort infrastructure was developed in the 20th century for winter sports and year-round mountain recreation, while the highland itself is a natural plateau shaped by alpine processes. The site is managed in coordination with the national park for conservation and tourism uses.
