Shibuya Crossing
Area Busy Tokyo intersection famed for massive pedestrian flows
Shibuya Crossing outside Shibuya Station is a high‑traffic pedestrian scramble framed by neon signage and department stores; visitors time photos, explore shopping floors and sample nearby nightlife.
Shibuya Crossing is the large pedestrian scramble outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo, known for its heavy pedestrian flows and surrounding neon signage. It is one of Tokyo’s most recognisable modern urban scenes and a common meeting point in the city.
At each signal change the intersection clears and pedestrians cross in multiple directions across several marked crosswalks; the crossing is framed by large commercial buildings, billboards and station exits. The junction regularly accommodates up to around 2,500 pedestrians at peak times and is closely associated with the nearby Hachikō statue and Shibuya shopping district.
The crossing emerged as a major urban landmark with the growth of Shibuya as a commercial and entertainment centre in the late 20th century. It is primarily a public urban intersection rather than a historic or religious site, and its appearance changes with time of day and advertising displays.
The crossing sits immediately outside the Hachikō exit of Shibuya Station in central Tokyo, about 1.5 km southwest of Harajuku and roughly 6 km west of the Imperial Palace. The area is densely built-up with shops, cinemas and offices.
- Photo locations: Best viewing points are from the large intersection corners outside Shibuya Station and from upper floors or terraces of nearby buildings and cafés.
- Crowd note: Peak pedestrian flows occur during early evening and weekend evenings when shopping and nightlife are busiest; beware of heavy crowds.

Tips for Visiting Shibuya Crossing #
- Visit during the evening rush (roughly 17:00-20:00) for the classic neon scramble photograph, but get your vantage point early (see below) to avoid the crowds at eye-level.
- For the best elevated view, watch the crossing from the Shibuya Tsutaya building (Starbucks floor) or, for a panoramic perspective, book Shibuya Sky on the Shibuya Scramble Square rooftop-these vantage points reduce jostling on the pavement.
- If you want to experience the area without the crush, explore the adjacent side streets (Center Gai and Koen-dori) outside peak hours or visit late at night when the crossing is dramatically quieter.
