Shenandoah National Park is a protected area in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, established in 1935 and noted for its long scenic ridge-top road and mountain landscapes. The park is popular for driving, hiking, waterfalls and fall foliage.

The park’s principal attraction is Skyline Drive, which runs approximately 105 miles along the crest of the park and provides access to numerous overlooks, trailheads and picnic areas. Hikers seek routes ranging from short falls walks to full-day ridge hikes; popular destinations include Old Rag Mountain and Big Meadows.

The park was established in the 1930s for recreation and conservation, with early infrastructure projects designed to make the ridge accessible by automobile while protecting forested slopes and watersheds. Over subsequent decades the park has expanded visitor services and trail systems while preserving large tracts of forest.

Shenandoah sits in northern Virginia along the Blue Ridge, roughly west of the Washington, D.C. region, with multiple park entrances and towns along its eastern and western flanks serving as access points.

  • Skyline Drive length: Skyline Drive extends about 105 miles through the park and is the primary scenic roadway with numerous overlooks for valley and ridge views.
  • Best time to visit: Peak fall foliage typically occurs from late September through October, making autumn the park's busiest season for scenic drives and overlooks.

How to Get to Shenandoah National Park #

Shenandoah National Park is best reached by car. From Washington, D.C., drive west on I‑66 toward Front Royal (about 1.5-2 hours, roughly 70-80 miles) and enter the park at the Front Royal/Thornton Gap end of Skyline Drive; other common vehicle approaches use US‑340, US‑211 or Route 33 depending on which entrance you choose. Skyline Drive is the park’s main road running the length of the park; park visitor centers and trailheads have parking with only short walks (minutes) from the lot to major viewpoints and trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Shenandoah National Park #

  • Aim for sunrise on weekdays when overlooks along Skyline Drive are at their quietest and the low light brings out the Blue Ridge fog-this also gives you first access to popular short hikes before crowds arrive.
  • Enter via the southern Rockfish Gap or Swift Run Gap stations rather than the Front Royal/Thornton Gap portals to avoid heavy weekend traffic from the north and to start closer to less-visited western-slope trails.
  • Don't just stop at overlooks: plan one or two short valley loops such as the Rose River area to experience waterfalls and forested sections that most drive-by visitors miss.
