Monticello

Monticello is the plantation home of Thomas Jefferson near Charlottesville, Virginia, and is one of the United States’ best-known historic houses. Construction began in 1768 and Jefferson redesigned and modified the house through about 1809; it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing shared with the University of Virginia.

The central villa contains guided house tours of Jefferson’s primary rooms, including the octagonal dome area, and exhibitions on his architecture, inventions, and collections. The site also preserves restored gardens and the service areas below the house that are interpreted for visitors, notably Mulberry Row.

Thomas Jefferson designed and oversaw construction and repeated alterations of the house during his lifetime; he used it as his family home and the center of his plantation operations. After Jefferson’s death in 1826 the property passed through private hands and was acquired and conserved in the early 20th century by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which now operates the museum and grounds.

Monticello sits on a hill in Albemarle County overlooking the surrounding valley, on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Virginia, and is approached via the Monticello estate road and visitor complex.

What to See #

• The House: The main neoclassical villa designed and extensively altered by Thomas Jefferson between 1768 and about 1809; includes the central domed rooms and original family living spaces interpreted on guided tours.
• Mulberry Row: A linear area of workshops, slave quarters, and service buildings immediately downhill from the house that is interpreted to explain the plantation's labor systems and crafts.
• Gardens and Landscape: Restored ornamental and kitchen gardens plus the designed landscape on the mountaintop that Jefferson laid out and altered over decades; offers house-facing terraces and views over the valley.
• Visitor Center and Museum: A modern visitor complex with exhibitions, ticketing, and orientation galleries that present Jefferson's papers, artifacts, and museum collections.
• Jefferson Family Grave: Small family graveyard on the grounds where Thomas Jefferson and members of his family are buried, located near the main house.
