The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is a Safavid-era mosque on the eastern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, Iran, constructed in the early 17th century as a private mosque for the royal court. It is celebrated for its richly detailed tilework and the harmonious proportions of its single dome.
The intricate mosaic and tile patterns on the dome interior, a finely proportioned entrance portal, and the absence of minarets, which reflects its original function as a private chapel for the shah’s entourage. The dome’s decoration and use of color are among the most studied examples of Safavid decorative arts.
Commissioned during the reign of Shah Abbas I and executed by leading royal artisans, the mosque has been conserved as part of Isfahan’s historic ensemble. Its location on Naqsh-e Jahan Square places it adjacent to other major Safavid monuments built in the same period.
