Sheikh Abd el-Qurna
Tomb Theban necropolis hillside with dozens of New Kingdom tombs
On Luxor’s West Bank, Sheikh Abd el-Qurna holds a cluster of private New Kingdom tombs with painted scenes; tourists come for tomb visits, archaeological context and views across the Nile plain.
Sheikh Abd el-Qurna is a hill and necropolis sector on the West Bank of the Nile at Thebes (modern Luxor), notable as one of the main burial areas for New Kingdom officials. The site concentrates many private tombs belonging to nobles and administrators from roughly the 18th to the 20th Dynasties of ancient Egypt.
The area is important for its painted and carved tomb interiors rather than monumental pyramids or temples. Many tombs feature scenes of daily life, offerings and funerary rites; the complex sits as a dense cluster of entrances on the hillside rather than a single monument. Walking the slopes provides close-up views of tomb façades and a panorama back toward the Nile and Luxor.
Archaeological activity and recording began in the 19th century and continued through the 20th century as Egyptology developed; tombs have been cleared, conserved and occasionally reburied to protect fragile decoration. The site remained in use primarily in the New Kingdom as private funerary accommodation for officials rather than royal burials.
Sheikh Abd el-Qurna sits on the western bank of the Nile opposite modern Luxor, within the wider Theban Necropolis. The hillside faces the floodplain and is part of a string of necropolis zones that includes Deir el-Medina, the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.
- Location: Sits on the West Bank of the Nile roughly 4-6 kilometers west of central Luxor, forming part of the larger Theban Necropolis.
- Tombs and access: Contains a dense cluster of private tombs of New Kingdom officials and nobles with painted wall scenes and carved reliefs, many of which are fragile and have restricted access.
How to Get to Sheikh Abd el-Qurna #
Sheikh Abd el-Qurna sits on Luxor’s West Bank opposite the modern city on the Nile. From Luxor city center take a taxi, paid felucca crossing or an organized West Bank tour across the Nile; the drive from central Luxor to Sheikh Abd el‑Qurna is roughly 5-8 km and typically takes 10-20 minutes by car. There is roadside parking near the cluster of tombs and temples and the site itself is reached on foot within a few minutes from the parking areas.
Tips for Visiting Sheikh Abd el-Qurna #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon when the light on the tomb paintings is best and organized tour groups are thin.
- Approach from the West Bank road near Deir el-Medina - the main tracks up the hill lead to most tombs; give yourself time to walk up the slope rather than relying on group shuttles.
- Many visitors stop at the handful of famous tombs low on the hill; climb higher along the terraces to see smaller, less-visited tombs with well-preserved scenes and far fewer people.
- Hire a licensed Egyptologist guide at Luxor or the site entrance to get access context and help prioritise which private tombs are open that day (opening can vary).
Best Time to Visit Sheikh Abd el-Qurna #
Go in winter or the shoulder seasons (Oct-Apr) to avoid the intense summer heat and to enjoy more comfortable conditions for exploring the hillside tombs.
