The Shanghai Grand Theatre is a large performing-arts complex on People’s Square in central Shanghai, opened in 1998 and designed as a multi-auditorium venue for opera, ballet, theatre and concerts. It serves as one of the city’s principal stages for large-scale performing arts.

The complex houses multiple performance halls and rehearsal spaces used for operas, symphony concerts, ballet and touring theatre productions. Programming includes domestic and international companies and occasional large gala events and festivals.

Construction and operation were undertaken by the municipal government with the theatre established to provide a modern home for Shanghai’s major performing arts organizations. Since opening it has become a primary venue for both Chinese and visiting international productions.

The theatre sits on the west side of People’s Square in Huangpu District, in the heart of central Shanghai, within walking distance of major museums, subway lines and commercial districts.

People’s Square is central in Shanghai. Take Metro Line 1, 2, or 8 to People’s Square station and follow exits toward the Shanghai Grand Theatre on Middle Fuxing Road. Taxis and buses also serve the square.
