City in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan
Old Shamakhi sits under jagged ridges, home to the 8th-century Juma Mosque and the Diri Baba mausoleum carved into cliffs. Tourists sample regional wines, carpets and climb nearby trails for views of the Kura plain.

Long established as a center of trade and spirituality, this provincial town attracts visitors for its historic mosques, marble-era mausoleums and craft traditions. The Friday (Juma) Mosque and nearby Diri Baba mausoleum provide architectural highlights, and workshops producing Shamakhy carpets let travelers see weaving techniques firsthand. How to Get to Shamakhi#
Shamakhi is most easily reached by road from Baku; there are no reliable direct long‑distance rail links. Regional minibuses (marshrutkas) from Baku’s Avtovağzal and private taxis are the common options.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD): The main international gateway for Azerbaijan. From GYD you can reach Shamakhi by taxi (roughly 90-120 minutes depending on traffic; taxis commonly cost around 30-50 AZN) or by taking a taxi to Baku’s main bus/coach terminal (Avtovağzal) and continuing by intercity minibus (marshrutka).
Gabala / Yevlakh (regional airports - limited services): These airports have limited or seasonal services; scheduled public connections to Shamakhi are not reliable. If a flight lands here you will need to continue by taxi or arrange a private transfer (times and prices vary and should be confirmed with the carrier).
Train: There is no direct high-frequency long‑distance rail service to Shamakhi. The nearest major rail hub is Baku (Bakı Dəmiryol Vağzalı/Gar). From Baku station you would take road transport the rest of the way.
Bus / Marshrutka: Intercity minibuses (marshrutkas) and regional buses depart from Baku’s Avtovağzal (Central Bus Station) to Shamakhi; journey time is typically about 1.5-2 hours depending on route and traffic. Fares for marshrutkas are modest (usually a single‑figure fare in AZN); taxis for a direct transfer are faster but substantially more expensive (see above).
How to Get Around Shamakhi#
Shamakhi is best reached and explored by road. Overnight trains or direct rail access are not a practical option; use marshrutkas or taxis from Baku, and walk locally once in town.
- Marshrutka / regional bus (≈3-8 AZN) - Regular minibuses depart Baku’s Avtovağzal for Shamakhi; services are frequent in daytime. Journeys typically take 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Marshrutkas are the cheapest option but can be crowded and have limited luggage space.
- Taxi / private transfer (≈30-60 AZN) - Taxis from Baku to Shamakhi are faster and door‑to‑door; travel time about 90-120 minutes. Agree a fixed fare before leaving or use an app/taxi company. Good for groups or if you have lots of luggage.
- Train (to Baku) + road (Varies (train: from BGN/AZN equivalent regional fares)) - If you are coming by rail, arrive at Baku’s main station (Bakı Dəmiryol Vağzalı) then switch to bus or taxi for Shamakhi. Rail schedules to Baku are reliable; onward road time is ~1.5-2 hours.
- Car hire (≈AZN 40+/day) - Hiring a car gives flexibility to explore Shamakhi and nearby villages, vineyards and historical sites. Roads are generally passable; watch for narrow mountain sections. Fuel and rental costs are comparable to other parts of Azerbaijan.
- Walking - Shamakhi town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot once you arrive; many sights and restaurants are within walking distance.
