Shalamar Gardens
Park Mughal-era formal gardens in Lahore, UNESCO World Heritage
Mughal-era terraced gardens in Lahore dating to the 17th century and listed by UNESCO. Visitors see sunken terraces, marble pavilions and hydraulic fountains, often combined with trips to Lahore’s other Mughal monuments and bazaars.
Shalamar Gardens is a Mughal garden complex in the Shahdara area of Lahore, Pakistan, built in 1641-1642 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. It is a well-preserved example of Mughal garden design and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The layout is organised as three terraced levels connected by axial water channels and a system of hundreds of fountain outlets, with formal pavilions, walkways and planted areas. Key on-site features include the terraced promenades, royal pavilions and the central water cascades that define the garden’s geometry.
Commissioned and constructed under imperial patronage in the early 1640s, the gardens have been maintained, altered and restored at various times but retain their original Mughal plan and hydraulic concept. They have been used historically for royal recreation and ceremonial purposes.
Shalamar Gardens lies north of Lahore’s old city along the Ravi River’s floodplain, in the Shahdara suburb; it is within the metropolitan area of Lahore and is reachable by road from the city’s centre within a short drive.
- Fountain system: The garden originally contained several hundred fountains fed by a gravity-driven water system; many survive or have been restored and remain a central feature of the layout.
- UNESCO designation: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the parks and gardens of the Mughal period; the complex is valued for its intact layout and hydraulic engineering.
What to See #
- Three terraces and waterworks: Upper, middle and lower terraces arranged on three levels, linked by axial water channels and hundreds of fountain outlets that form the garden's hydraulic system.
