How to Get to Shaki, Azerbaijan

Shaki is most commonly reached overland from Baku or nearby regional airports; there is no regular passenger rail directly to the town. Fly into Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku or Ganja International Airport (GNJ) and continue by intercity bus or marshrutka to Shaki.

By Air

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD): Most international visitors arrive at Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport. From the airport you can take the HavaŞ airport shuttle or a taxi into central Baku (HavaŞ ~2-3 AZN, ~30-40 minutes depending on traffic), then change at Baku Avtovağzal (the main bus station) for direct buses or marshrutkas to Shaki (see bus card). The total door-to-door journey is commonly 5-7 hours and will cost roughly 10-15 AZN including the shuttle and the intercity bus.

Ganja International Airport (GNJ): Ganja is the nearest larger regional airport that sees some domestic and seasonal flights. From Ganja airport you can get a taxi to Ganja bus station (a short 15-25 minute ride) and then take a bus or marshrutka to Shaki; the Ganja→Shaki leg is typically 6-10 AZN and takes about 2-3 hours. Taxis from Ganja airport directly to Shaki are faster but significantly more expensive (expect a higher fare than the shared bus).

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct passenger rail service into Shaki. The nearest major railheads are Baku Central Railway Station (Bakı Dəmir Yolu Vağzalı) and Ganja station; travelers can take an intercity train to Ganja (several daily services from Baku, fares vary by class - commonly in the range of 6-20 AZN - and take around 4-5 hours), then switch to a bus or taxi for the 2-3 hour onward journey to Shaki.

Bus: Direct intercity buses and marshrutkas (shared minibuses) run to Shaki from Baku Avtovağzal (Baku International Bus Station) and from regional hubs such as Ganja. Baku→Shaki buses/marshrutkas typically cost about 8-12 AZN and take roughly 5-6 hours; Ganja→Shaki services are shorter (about 2-3 hours) and usually cost around 6-10 AZN. Marshrutkas leave frequently and are the most common option for independent travelers.

How to Get Around Shaki, Azerbaijan

Shaki is easiest to navigate on foot around the Old Town, while marshrutkas and local buses handle most intercity and regional travel - taxis fill gaps and save time. For independence and access to nearby villages, consider hiring a car, but expect public minibuses to remain the budget traveller's go‑to option.
