Shahdag National Park is a protected area in northeastern Azerbaijan created to conserve the ecosystems of the Greater Caucasus, including mountain, forest and alpine habitats.

The park contains rugged mountain landscapes, alpine meadows and forested valleys where visitors go for hiking, wildlife observation and scenic mountain vistas; nearby recreational developments support winter sports in the region.

How to Get to Shahdag National Park #

Shahdag National Park is reached by road from Baku (roughly 2.5-3.5 hours by car depending on traffic). The nearest sizable settlements include Ismayilli and the village clusters along the park’s western edge. Local minivans and private transfers from Baku to Ismayilli or Shahdag resort towns are common; once at the resort, trails and lifts are accessible on foot.

Tips for Visiting Shahdag National Park #

  • Hire a local ranger or guide for alpine treks-trail signage is sparse in higher zones.
  • Acclimatize in nearby towns (Qarabagh/Ismayilli) before heading into alpine ridgelines-altitude reaches over 3,000 m in parts of the park.
  • Bring insect repellent for lower-elevation forests; early mornings and late afternoons are best for wildlife spotting.
