Why Visit Sfax? #

Sfax is Tunisia’s working port and culinary capital, prized for its well-preserved medina, bustling souks and strong food culture. Olive oil merchants, spice stalls and charcoal-grilled seafood define the market experience, while narrow streets lead to traditional cafés where locals gather. Craftsmanship and authentic daily life remain visible here, offering a more down-to-earth glimpse of Tunisian coastal commerce than the resort towns.

How to Get to Sfax

Sfax is served directly by Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA) and by regional rail at Gare de Sfax-Ville. For some international flights low-cost carriers use Monastir (MIR), from which you can reach Sfax by train, bus or louage.

By Air

Sfax-Thyna International Airport (SFA): The airport lies about 8-10 km south of central Sfax. From SFA you can take a taxi into town (approx. 10-15 TND, 15-25 minutes depending on traffic) or use local bus/shuttle services which are cheaper but slower (roughly 1-3 TND, 30-45 minutes). Taxis are the fastest and most reliable if you have luggage; confirm the approximate fare before starting.

Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport (MIR): Monastir is the nearest larger international airport often used by budget carriers and lies roughly 100-110 km north of Sfax. To reach Sfax from Monastir you can combine a regional train or intercity bus/louage; journey time is typically 1.5-2.5 hours and fares are around 10-20 TND depending on mode and operator.

By Train & Bus

Train: Sfax’s main rail hub is Gare de Sfax-Ville, served by SNCFT regional and intercity services (routes to Tunis, Sousse, Gabès and others). Travel times vary widely - for example, Sfax to Tunis takes several hours - and second-class fares are modest (typically in the low tens of TND for longer intercity trips). Trains are a comfortable option for longer journeys but check the SNCFT timetable for current schedules.

Bus / Louage (shared taxi): Intercity buses and louages depart from Sfax’s central bus station and from dedicated louage ranks; they connect Sfax with most Tunisian cities. Louages (shared grand-taxis) leave when full and are usually faster than coaches; fares to nearby cities often range from about 5-15 TND and travel times depend on distance. Buses are cheaper and frequent for regional travel - keep extra time in mind for stops.

How to Get Around Sfax

Getting around Sfax is easiest by a mix of walking in the compact central districts and short taxi rides for door-to-door convenience. For regional travel, trains and louages are the practical choices - trains for comfort on longer routes, louages for speed and frequency to nearby towns.
