Seuthopolis
Archaeological Site Ruined ancient Thracian city from Hellenistic period
A partially submerged Thracian city founded by King Seuthes III, now under the Koprinka reservoir; archaeological finds from Seuthopolis are displayed in the nearby museum.
Seuthopolis was an ancient Thracian city founded by King Seuthes III in the Hellenistic period and located near present-day Kazanlak in central Bulgaria. It was established as a planned urban centre and served as a royal and administrative seat in its region.
Excavations in the mid 20th century revealed an orthogonal street plan, an agora and a palace complex before the site was flooded by the construction of a reservoir. The excavated plan and finds showed a mix of Thracian and Hellenistic urban features.
The city dates to the late 4th century BC and was founded by Seuthes III, who ruled part of the Odrysian kingdom. Archaeological work took place in the mid 20th century prior to inundation, producing plans and artefacts that inform understanding of the settlement.
Seuthopolis lies in central Bulgaria within Stara Zagora Province near the town of Kazanlak; the original site is now largely under the Koprinka Reservoir created in the 20th century. The surrounding landscape is river valley and agricultural land.
- Submerged site: Most archaeological remains are submerged beneath the Koprinka Reservoir; visible material and prior excavation records are the primary sources of information for visitors and researchers.
What to See #
- Urban grid and agora: Remains of the planned Hellenistic city founded and named for a Thracian king, known from excavations carried out before the site was inundated by a reservoir in the 20th century.
- Palace and public complex: Fortified palace and adjacent public buildings excavated in earlier digs that revealed orthogonal streets and monumental architecture typical of Hellenistic civic centres.
How to Get to Seuthopolis #
Seuthopolis is located at the Koprinka Reservoir near the town of Kazanlak (Stara Zagora Province). The usual approach is to reach Kazanlak by intercity train on the Sofia-Burgas line (the rapid/Regional Express services call at Kazanlak) or by intercity bus from Stara Zagora or Sofia; from Kazanlak hire a taxi or use a local minibus to Koprinka Reservoir (a short drive). On arrival there is a short walk from the road/parking to the reservoir edge where the remains and interpretation are located.
Tips for Visiting Seuthopolis #
- Seuthopolis itself lies submerged beneath the Koprinka reservoir, so plan to visit the Regional History/Archaeological museum in nearby Kazanlak first to see finds and interpretive displays about the site.
- Check museum opening hours and guided‑tour availability before you go - most visitors see the museum exhibits rather than the buried remains, and guided talks provide context on why the city was inundated.
- If you want to view the reservoir area, pair a museum visit with a short drive around the Koprinka lake shores for vantage points and local interpretation panels rather than expecting on‑site excavations.
Best Time to Visit Seuthopolis #
Plan for late spring through early autumn for the mildest weather and most comfortable visits to sites and museums around Seuthopolis.
