Serranía de los Churumbelos

Serraní­a de los Churumbelos is a remote mountain range in southern Colombia noted for steep ridges and cloud forest habitats that connect Andean and Amazonian ecosystems. The range has been the focus of biological inventories because of its rich and often endemic flora and fauna.

The area supports montane forests, cloud forests and transitional habitats used by a wide range of bird, amphibian and mammal species; it has attracted international conservation attention for its biodiversity values. Field surveys and scientific work in the serranía have documented species of conservation interest and highlighted the region’s importance as a biogeographic corridor.

The serranía lies in southern Colombia within the Cauca Department on the eastern slopes of the Andes, forming a link between high Andean ridges and lower Amazonian foothills. The terrain is rugged and access is limited, with nearby settlements few and widely spaced.
