How to Get to Salento
Salento is a popular small town in Colombia's coffee region (Quindío). The nearest airports are El Edén (AXM) in Armenia and Matecaña (PEI) in Pereira; onward travel is by short bus or shuttle-there is no rail service to Salento.
El Edén Airport (AXM) - Armenia: Armenia’s El Edén (AXM) is the closest airport to Salento. From AXM you can take a taxi to Armenia bus terminal (15-25 minutes, COP 15,000-25,000) then a direct bus to Salento (approx 45-60 minutes, COP 4,000-7,000).
Matecaña Airport (PEI) - Pereira: Pereira is another option; from Pereira airport a taxi to the terminal and a bus or shuttle to Salento usually takes 1-1.5 hours total depending on connections and is commonly used by travellers based in the coffee-region hubs.
Bus: There is no passenger rail service to Salento. Frequent buses and colectivos run from Armenia’s terminal to Salento with journey times around 45-60 minutes; fares are inexpensive and vehicles are geared toward tourists. During high season shuttle services operate directly from Pereira and Armenia.
Taxi / Private Transfer: For convenience, taxis or private transfers from Armenia or Pereira take about 40-75 minutes depending on the starting point and are useful if arriving late or with luggage.
How to Get Around Salento #
Salento is very walkable: the town center, viewpoints and cafés are easily reached on foot. Jeeps (Willys) run regularly to the Valle de Cocora, and buses connect Salento with Pereira, Armenia and other regional hubs. Wear sturdy shoes for steep, cobbled streets and book transport to Valle de Cocora in advance during high season. Taxis and local buses are available for longer trips.
