Serra Malagueta Mountains

Serra Malagueta is a mountain range and protected natural area on Santiago Island in Cape Verde that conserves native vegetation and volcanic terrain. The area contains rugged peaks, steep valleys and hiking routes that attract visitors interested in nature and island landscapes.

Trails and viewpoints provide access to the higher slopes, and conservation measures aim to protect endemic plant species and local biodiversity while allowing managed recreation. The region is valued for its scenery and for opportunities to observe island flora.

The range forms part of the interior highlands of northern-central Santiago Island and is accessed from nearby settlements on the island. It functions as a local conservation and outdoor recreation area within Cape Verde’s island system.

Serra Malagueta lies on Santiago Island in Cape Verde and occupies a central-northern interior sector of the island, reached by island roads from coastal towns.

Serra Malagueta Natural Park is on the island of Santiago. From the island capital Praia you drive northwest toward Assomada and then follow local roads and signs to the park (the drive from Praia to the Assomada/Serra Malagueta area is typically about 40-60 km and under 2 hours depending on route and stops). Regular shared taxis (aluguers) and local minibuses run from Assomada toward villages on the park’s edges; from the local roadheads short hikes (from 10-30 minutes) lead into the park.

• Plan hikes in the cooler early morning hours - mountain trails in Serra Malagueta climb steeply and the island's microclimate can become hot and hazy later in the day.
• Hire a local guide or join an organized walk from the nearest towns - trails can be rocky and local guides know the best viewpoints, safe routes and how to reach the park's summits and lookouts.
• Arrange transport from the nearest population center in advance; public transport options are limited and arranging a taxi or guided transfer ensures you can start and finish trails without being stranded.
