Serra da Chela is a mountain range and escarpment in Namibe Province in southwestern Angola that marks the transition from the coastal plain to the inland plateau. Its steep slopes and cliffs form a distinct geological barrier between the Namib coastal zone and higher-elevation interior country.
The range is characterized by steep escarpments and rugged terrain that channel seasonal streams and create locally cooler conditions compared with the arid lowlands. It is a regional landmark for road routes that cross from the coast to inland towns.
The mountains are part of Angola’s broader highland system and were formed by uplift and long-term erosion processes. Local communities have used mountain passes and valleys for grazing and small-scale agriculture where conditions permit.
Geographically the Serra da Chela runs east of the Namibian coastal plain in Namibe Province, inland from the port city area on the coast. The escarpment overlooks the low-lying desert and provides a clear topographic divide to the higher interior plateau.
