Sensō-ji
Shrine Ancient Tokyo Buddhist temple with famous Kaminarimon gate
Sensō‑ji anchors Asakusa with its Kaminarimon gate and the Nakamise shopping street leading to the temple; visitors combine temple rituals with street food stalls and seasonal festivals.
Sensō-ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, located in Asakusa and traditionally dated to 645 AD. It is one of the city’s most visited religious sites and a focal point for festivals and tourism.
The complex includes a long approach lined with nearly 80 to 90 shops, a monumental outer gate with a large red lantern, the main worship hall and a five-story pagoda. The shopping street is about 250 metres long and provides access to the temple plaza and ceremonial areas. The grounds host regular religious ceremonies and seasonal festivals that draw large crowds.
Legend relates the temple’s founding to the discovery of a small statue of Kannon; the site developed into a major Buddhist temple over the 7th century and later centuries. Many of the current buildings are reconstructions following damage from fires and World War II, with major postwar rebuilding in the 20th century.
The temple sits in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, a short walk from Asakusa Station on multiple subway lines and roughly 4 km northeast of the Tokyo Imperial Palace. The surrounding area is a mix of low-rise shops, tourist facilities and older neighbourhood streets.
- Photography tips: Best photo points are from the front of the Kaminarimon gate and along Nakamise-dori early morning, when the street is quiet.
- Timing: Weekends and festival days can be very crowded; arrive before 09:00 to avoid the busiest period and for cooler temperatures.
What to See #
- Nakamise-dori: Street of traditional shops leading from the gate to the main hall, lined with roughly 80 to 90 stores selling snacks, souvenirs and festival goods; about 250 metres long.
- Kaminarimon: Iconic outer gate with a massive red lantern that marks the temple entrance and faces the main shopping street.
- Hozomon: Inner gate that stands between the shopping street and the main temple complex; rebuilt several times after wartime damage.
- Main Hall (Hondo): Main worship hall where ceremonies are held and visitors offer prayers; the current structure is a 20th-century reconstruction.
- Five-story Pagoda: A multi-tiered pagoda within the temple grounds that is a visible landmark in the Asakusa skyline.

- Go very early (before the Nakamise shops open) to experience Sensō‑ji with far fewer people and to get unobstructed views of the Kaminarimon and main approach.

- After seeing the main hall, walk the side streets and the area behind Hōzōmon for quieter temples, small shops and local stalls many visitors skip while focused on Nakamise-dori.
