Senghar-Jabess National Park

National Park Tunisian national park protecting Saharan oases and dunes

Shandur National Park occupies a high mountain plateau and pass region in northern Pakistan that includes the Shandur Top and surrounding alpine meadows. The area is noted for its broad grassy summit and for hosting one of the world’s highest polo grounds.

The most visited feature is the Shandur Polo Ground at about 3,700 metres elevation, where the annual Shandur Polo Festival takes place each July and attracts local teams and spectators. Outside the festival, the park offers high-altitude trekking, grazing meadows and panoramic mountain views.

The plateau has long been used seasonally by local communities for grazing and sporting contests; the modern festival and park status have increased visitor interest and efforts to manage seasonal impacts. Access is typically limited to the summer months when the mountain roads are open.

Shandur National Park lies on the high watershed between Chitral and northern Gilgit-Baltistan in the western ranges of Pakistan. The site is remote and accessible by road from the valleys on either side during the short summer season.

  • Elevation: The alpine plateau sits at around 3,700 metres elevation and is known for its short summer season of accessible roads and events.
  • Polo festival timing: The annual Shandur Polo Festival in July draws teams and spectators to the high-altitude polo ground and is the park's principal public event.
