Sénanque Abbey

Sénanque Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in Provence, France, known for its well-preserved 12th-century Romanesque architecture and surrounding lavender fields. The abbey remains a working monastery and retains much of its medieval plan and stonework.

The complex includes a Romanesque abbey church, cloister and monastic buildings that illustrate typical Cistercian austerity and arrangement. Its setting in a valley near the Luberon makes the abbey visually distinctive, particularly when lavender is in bloom.

Founded in the 12th century as part of the Cistercian expansion in Provence, the abbey has survived cycles of decline and restoration and has continued as a religious house with monastic life into the present day. Conservation work over the 19th and 20th centuries stabilized and repaired medieval fabric.

The abbey sits in the Vaucluse department of Provence, near the village of Gordes in the Luberon area, surrounded by agricultural land and low limestone hills typical of the region.
