Senado Square
Plaza Historic Macau square framed by Portuguese colonial buildings
Senado Square in Macau’s historic centre features Portuguese pavement and colonial façades; visitors come for heritage architecture, Cantonese‑Portuguese food and proximity to the Ruins of St. Paul’s.
Senado Square is a paved civic square on the Macau Peninsula that functions as a focal point of the city’s historic colonial quarter. It is a central urban plaza surrounded by Portuguese-style civic buildings and churches and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macau.
The paved square is distinguished by its patterned Portuguese pavement and is flanked by landmarks such as the Leal Senado Building and St. Dominic’s Church, along with pastel-colored colonial facades. The area is pedestrianised and busy with shops, cafes and seasonal decorations.
Historically the square evolved as the administrative and commercial heart of Portuguese Macau; the Leal Senado served as the municipal chamber. The urban fabric reflects centuries of Sino-Portuguese interaction and colonial municipal planning.
The square lies in the central area of the Macau Peninsula, within walking distance of the Ruins of St. Paul’s and other historic sites, and is accessible from major transport points across Macau.
