Semperoper

The Semperoper is Dresden’s principal opera house located on Theaterplatz in the city center of Saxony, Germany. It is the work of architect Gottfried Semper and is renowned for its neo-Renaissance façade and historic association with the city’s musical life.

The auditorium seats roughly 1,300 people and hosts opera, ballet and orchestral programs by the Saxon State Opera and Staatskapelle Dresden. The building is noted for ornate interior decoration, sculptural groups on the exterior, and an active schedule of performances and evening productions.

The original theatre by Semper opened in the 19th century, was rebuilt after a destructive fire in the 1860s and again after severe damage in 1945. A major restoration and reopening took place in the late 20th century, returning the house to active cultural use.

Situated on Theaterplatz, the Semperoper forms part of Dresden’s historical core and sits close to landmarks such as the Zwinger palace and the cathedral.
