Island Nile island with ancient quarries and pharaonic inscriptions
Sehel Island near Aswan preserves ancient granite quarries, pharaonic inscriptions and rock-cut remains; Nile-side visitors explore carved texts, quarry sites and views toward Aswan’s river crossings.
Sehel Island is an island in the Nile River near Aswan in southern Egypt that contains extensive ancient granite quarries and a dense concentration of rock inscriptions. The island is notable for its carved stelae and epigraphic record spanning pharaonic and later periods.
The island is best known for its carved texts and stelae, including the so-called Famine Stele, along with numerous graffiti-style inscriptions left by pilgrims, officials and travelers over centuries. The exposed granite faces and quarry scars are visible features that link the site to ancient stone-working for monuments and temples.
Sehel was used in antiquity as a quarry and as a stopping place for Nile traffic heading to and from Upper Egypt; inscriptions on the island record requests, dedications and events from pharaonic to Greco-Roman times. The Famine Stele and other inscriptions have been subjects of Egyptological study for their historical and literary content.
The island lies in the Nile a short distance downstream of modern Aswan and is commonly reached by short boat trips from the city. It sits within the Aswan Governorate and forms part of the archaeological landscape that includes nearby islands and Nile quays.
- Epigraphic wealth: Contains numerous ancient inscriptions in hieroglyphic and later scripts scratched into exposed granite surfaces by travelers and officials over millennia.
- Access from Aswan: Accessible by short boat rides or feluccas from Aswan, making it a common half-day excursion for visitors based in the city.
What to See #
- Granite quarries and inscriptions: A granite quarry area and many exposed rock faces that bear ancient inscriptions, carvings and stelae from pharaonic and later periods.
- Famine Stele: A prominent carved stele known as the Famine Stele, an inscribed text of Greco-Roman date that recounts an earlier period of famine and irrigation works.
