Se Cathedral
Church Massive Baroque cathedral in Old Goa
In Old Goa, the Sé Cathedral attracts visitors for its Portuguese-era architecture, towering nave and colonial religious art; tourists often combine it with nearby churches and local Goan cuisine.
The Se Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Santa Catarina, is a large Portuguese-era cathedral in Old Goa dedicated to Saint Catherine and one of the principal churches from Goa’s colonial period. It is part of the group of churches and convents in Old Goa recognised for their historical and architectural value.
The interior features a spacious nave and several chapels with altarpieces and liturgical objects from the Portuguese period. The cathedral is often visited for its scale, colonial-era architecture and ecclesiastical furnishings rather than for major archaeological displays.
Construction and major work on the cathedral date to the 16th century during Portuguese rule in Goa; the building reflects the Renaissance and Manueline influences introduced by Portuguese architects and patrons. It has served as the seat of the archbishop of Goa in the colonial and post-colonial periods.
Located in the historic centre of Old Goa on the Mandovi’s northern bank, the cathedral is accessible from the state capital Panaji by road and forms part of a compact cluster of colonial churches and convents that attract cultural and religious tourism.
