Schwielowsee is a lake and adjacent municipality in Brandenburg, Germany, lying southwest of Potsdam and forming part of the local lakeshore landscape. The lake is bordered by several small villages and is used for recreation and local boating.

Shoreline attractions include the villages of Caputh, Ferch and Geltow, with small marinas, bathing spots and walking paths; Caputh is notable for the Albert Einstein summer house on its shore. The lake is commonly used for sailing, motor boating and swimming in summer and has several public access points.

Historically the lake shore supported fishing and small-scale transport between settlements; in the 20th century it became increasingly important for leisure and tourism around Potsdam. The lakeside villages developed as residential and holiday communities while retaining rural character.

Tips for Visiting Schwielowsee #

  • Aim for early morning or late afternoon when the water is calm and the shoreline is quieter; midday on summer weekends is when the main beaches and piers fill up.
  • Launch or board boats from the smaller village piers (for example Caputh, Geltow or Ferch) rather than the largest public beaches-these smaller access points are less crowded and give quicker access to quieter bays.
  • Explore the reed-lined northern and eastern shorelines by kayak or a rented small boat; many visitors stay around the main beaches and miss the lake's quieter coves and birdlife.
