Schloss Braunfels Castle

Schloss Braunfels (Burg Braunfels) is a historic hilltop castle overlooking the town of Braunfels in Hesse. The site combines medieval remains with 19th-century restoration work.

A compact fortified complex with towers, courtyards and renovated interiors, offering panoramic views over the town and the valley below. Guided tours and public visiting areas typically cover the key historic rooms and the battlemented high points.

The castle’s origins date to the medieval period, and it underwent substantial 19th-century rebuilding and stylistic changes that produced the neo-Gothic aspects visible today. It has been used as a noble residence and later opened to the public in parts.

Perched above the historic centre of Braunfels in Hesse, the castle dominates the small town and the surrounding wooded valley.

• Medieval origins with 19th-century restoration: Origins reach back to the medieval period with significant 19th-century restoration that gave the castle its present, largely romanticized appearance.
