Savandurga is a large granite hill and rock outcrop in Karnataka, located to the west of Bengaluru and visible across the western plains. The formation consists of two principal summits and is a well-known local destination for trekking and rock climbing.

The site attracts hikers and climbers for its steep rock faces and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The area includes a temple complex at the foot of the hill that is frequently used as the access point for ascents.

Historically the hill has hosted fortifications and temples and has been part of regional power struggles in the premodern period; visible ruins and masonry on the ridge reflect that past use. The religious site at the base continues to be active for local worship.

Savandurga sits in the dry deciduous landscape west of Bengaluru in southern Karnataka, within driving distance of the city and commonly accessed from nearby towns and villages on the Bengaluru-Mysuru corridor.

  • Scale: Often described as one of the largest granite monolith hills in Asia, it is a prominent landmark on the western edge of the Bengaluru plains.
  • Timing and difficulty: Best climbed early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat; trails are steep and partly rocky, suitable for hikers and experienced scramble/rock-climbers where protected routes exist.

What to See #

  • Karigudda (Black Hill): One of two main rocky summits of the formation; the steeper, more popular peak for scrambling and rock climbing.
  • Billigudda (White Hill): The secondary, slightly lower summit that together with the Black Hill forms the Savandurga massif; approached by separate routes and trails.
  • Savandurga Temple (Veerabhadraswamy): A historic temple complex at the base dedicated to a local form of the deity Veerabhadra; serves as the usual starting point for ascents.

How to Get to Savandurga #

Savandurga is a large granite hill about 50-60 km west of Bengaluru (Bangalore) and is commonly visited as a day trip from the city. By car it takes around 1.5-2 hours from central Bengaluru; take the Bengaluru-Magadi direction (buses also run toward Magadi and nearby towns), then local roads to the Savandurga village/parking area. From the parking/vehicle drop-off the main trailheads are a short walk (typically 10-30 minutes) up to the base of the climbing routes.

Tips for Visiting Savandurga #

  • Start very early on weekdays to avoid the strong heat and the weekend crowds that flock here from Bangalore; many hikers aim to be on the trailhead before sunrise.
  • Choose your route carefully: the site has two main summits (the steeper rock-face route and an easier ridge), so pick the ascent that matches your experience and stick to the marked trail and local guidance.
