São Francisco Square

São Francisco Square (Praça São Francisco) is the central colonial plaza in São Cristóvão, Sergipe, Brazil. It anchors a compact ensemble of 17th- to 19th-century religious and civic buildings.

The square is dominated by the Franciscan Convent and Church and surrounded by preserved colonial houses and public buildings, forming one of Brazil’s most complete colonial town ensembles. The site is compact and walkable; guided walks typically visit the church interiors, convent cloister and nearby colonial-era streets.

Developed during the colonial period, the square and its religious complex served as the town’s religious and administrative core. Over centuries the buildings were adapted and preserved, culminating in recognition as a heritage ensemble of regional and national importance.

Located in the town of São Cristóvão in Sergipe state, the square lies inland from Brazil’s northeastern coast. The town is north of Aracaju, the state capital, and the square sits within the historic town centre.
