São Bento Palace

São Bento Palace is the seat of Portugal’s national parliament located in central Lisbon; the complex occupies a historic monastery site dating to the 16th century. It serves as the working headquarters of the Assembly of the Republic and is an important locus of Portuguese political life.

The building presents a notable historic façade facing Praça de São Bento and contains the assembly chamber and parliamentary offices. The exterior and the square are the most accessible parts for visitors; interior spaces are principally for official use.

The core building originated as a Benedictine monastery in the 16th century and was adapted over time to serve state functions following the 19th century secular reforms. It became the parliamentary seat in the 19th century and has been altered and refurbished periodically since then.

The palace sits in central Lisbon, within the Lisbon District, close to other central neighbourhoods and avenues. It is reached on foot or by short public-transport links from the city centre.
