Santo Antão is an island in the Barlavento (windward) group of Cape Verde, known for steep volcanic mountains and deep agricultural valleys. It is noted for its dramatic terrain and strong hiking culture.

The island is prized for long coastal and mountain trails that run through terraced valleys and along ridgelines; popular routes cross the Cova-Paul-Ribeira da Torre corridor and links between Ribeira Grande and the highlands. Stops commonly include small farming villages, viewpoints over deep ravines and lush green valleys that contrast with Cape Verde’s drier islands.

Portuguese navigators charted and settled the Cape Verde islands in the 15th century and Santo Antão developed as an agricultural and rural island under Portuguese rule. Over time traditional terrace agriculture and village settlements shaped the island’s landscape; it remains sparsely urbanized compared with other Cape Verde islands.

The island sits in northwest Cape Verde, immediately west of São Vicente and within the Barlavento archipelago. Porto Novo is the island’s main ferry port and administrative center, while Ribeira Grande is the principal town on the northeast coast.

  • Highest point: The island's highest point is Tope de Coroa at about 1,979 metres, making it the most mountainous island in Cape Verde.
  • Access: Ferry services link the island's main port with nearby São Vicente, providing the primary connections for visitors and supplies.

What to See #

  • Porto Novo: The island's main port and administrative center on the south coast, serving regular ferry links to São Vicente and other islands.
  • Ribeira Grande: A coastal town on the northeast coast that is a local service center and gateway for hikes into nearby valleys.
  • Cova / Paul area: A deep volcanic crater and surrounding highland that is a starting point for several long-distance walking routes across the island's interior.

How to Get to Santo Antão, Cape Verde #

Santo Antão is reached primarily by ferry from São Vicente (Mindelo). Fly into São Vicente’s Cesária Évora Airport (or arrive by ship), then take the regular passenger ferry to Porto Novo on Santo Antão; from Porto Novo onward travel is by taxi or local minibuses (aluguer) that serve the island’s main villages and mountain roads.

Ferry frequency is typically daily but varies by season and sea conditions; once on the island the main coastal road links Porto Novo with Ribeira Grande and other settlements, though inland travel uses winding mountain roads.

Tips for Visiting Santo Antão, Cape Verde #

  • Use the ferry connection from São Vicente (Mindelo) to Porto Novo as your usual access route-Porto Novo is the main port serving Santo Antão and schedules are linked to inter-island services.
  • Head to the island's interior valleys (Ribeira Grande, Paul) early in the morning to take advantage of cooler conditions and clearer views-the dramatic terraces and viewpoints are busiest from late morning onward.
  • Hire a local guide for multi-day hiking routes: trails are steep and route-finding is easier with someone who knows seasonal changes, private footpaths and the best valley-to-valley crossings that many independent walkers miss.
